    • "Bill is a true independent voice on the SC.  He understands his responsibilities and role better than any other member.  He knows that he is not there to rubber stamp what the administration wants.  He is there to provide the necessary oversight of the administration on behalf of all the stakeholders in our schools.  Bill is a hard-working, disciplined, and extremely dedicated individual and it shows on the SC.  The SC and our schools are far better off than they were three years ago because of Bill's presence.  We need to make sure we keep him on the SC."

    • Joan Amon I have known Bill Hayner for many years...

"Bill is a very, very intelligent person who is using his talents to help others - especially kids. I admire his willingness to stand up for what he believes."

Bill is willing to do what it takes to support ALL the children and families in Arlington Public Schools.  He is a tireless worker and knowledgeable educator.  Bill has proven his commitment to listening, learning, understanding, weighing options and making the right decisions, whether they are popular and politically expedient or not!  He is the only true ally of special needs student and families in Arlington.  He more than deserves your vote.

I have had the opportunity for extended conversations with Bill Hayner. Bill is a fascinating and impressive guy. A retired teacher with extensive union experience, he is also a law school graduate, a mix that gives him a unique handle on the issues facing our schools today. He is highly knowledgeable about education and its legal context, about how schools operate, and about the roles and responsibilities of the various entities and individuals that make it all work. A disciplined thinker and flexible communicator, Bill is an excellent person on the Arlington School Committee.

Going back to the time I was a student in the Arlington Public Schools, which was 1952 through 1964, the School Committee often suffered from a reputation marred by arrogance, dysfunction, and  incompetence.  Over the past few years the Committee's decisions regarding School leadership and personnel issues were questionable, to say the least.  To me, in some instances behaviors exhibited by some members of the Committee were reprehensible, but unfortunately not unexpected.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill Hayner more than forty years ago.  As time passed my admiration for him has grown steadily.  At this critical juncture when our Town is facing a terrible financial strain and the schools face incredible difficulties, I believe Bill can bring wisdom and reason to School Committee functioning.

He is a dedicated individual whose actions prove his beliefs and values.  The fact that he chose to teach at the primary level in a public school for his entire career as an educator speaks to exactly that point.  He works tirelessly as a volunteer.  Reading to little ones at Robbins Library, building homes for Habitat for Humanity, helping bereaved children deal with the death of a loved one at The Children's Room, and serving as an elected Town Meeting Member are some of the other ways he demonstrates integrity to his principles.

Bill Hayner is not afraid to take on a challenge.  At one point he "threw his  hat into the ring" as a candidate for State Representative.  He proved his courage when he began studying law at an age when many of us are beginning to dream of retirement plans.  And now he is doing it again!

    • Stephen Gilligan

Bill Hayner is the most conscientious, dedicated, honest, and to-the-point school committee member I have come to know and respect. I'm voting for Bill Hayner, and I urge everyone to vote for Bill too !

We are writing in support of Bill Hayner as a candidate for Arlington School Committee.

Bill Hayner has the experience and commitment it will take to bring the School Committee back to where it belongs.

Bill was a teacher for 28 years, an active Town Meeting member for six years and has dedicated his life to public service and in many other areas, both professionally and voluntarily.

The children of Arlington deserve a school committee that will focus on their educational needs and as taxpayers, we need a school committee that will invest our tax dollars wisely for these children. Bill Hayner has the integrity and expertise to make sure this happens.

Please join us in giving Bill Hayner one of your three votes for Arlington School Committee.

Having Bill Hayner on the School Committee provides taxpayers with the benefit of the voice of reason when it comes to expensive legal issues that are not fully understood by other SC members whose strengths lie in other areas. Bill understands the law as it affects contracts with teachers, where he has been a key player in negotiations that foster a mutually respectful relationship between the administration and the teachers in whose hands we place the lives of our children for half of their waking hours. He also understands special education law, as a law person, as a retired teacher, and as a person with a family member with developmental disabilities. Having him on the School Committee is critical to avoiding the kind of expensive legal issues that have plagued the district for years.
Let's not repeat mistakes of the past -- let's keep Bill on the SC to watch our backs and our wallets!

    With great respect and appreciation.

We are supporting William Hayner for School Committee. We have known Bill for 12 years. He is our neighbor and someone who has helped us get a better understanding of how the educational system should work. He is an educator, law school graduate, and knowledgeable in contract negotiations who approaches teaching and negotiations in a pro-active way. He is uniquely qualified to help the Arlington School system resolve many of the problems facing it. Bill will be an excellent addition to the Arlington School Committee. Please join us in voting for Bill on April 5th.

I'm taking this opportunity to encourage Arlington's registered voters to join me in voting for Bill Hayner for School Committee on April 5th.

If we could build a prototypical school committee member, we would build Bill Hayner. Bill has the wisdom of someone that has spent a lifetime in education, because, in fact, he has. He has taught at all grade levels, with gifted and special education students alike. Bill is also pragmatic, having spent several years as a town meeting member.  He understands budgets and the budgetary ramifications of the choices we make.

Bill understands that politics (even politics with which we may agree) has no place on a school committee.  He realizes that personal agendas have no place in the discussion about our children’s education.

Bill has experienced both the management and labor sides of the negotiating table.  He has a non-confrontational style, buttressed by a no-nonsense expectation that each side understand that they are working toward the same goal.

Upon retiring from the teaching profession Bill continued his own education, earning a law degree and teaching required courses in education law to those seeking principal accreditation.

It's almost uncanny - the extent to which the issues surrounding our school department and our school committee are issues about which Bill has knowledge and expertise.

I'm grateful that Bill is running because I have children in the school district, but I'm writing this letter because you probably do too.

I have known Bill Hayner for many years.  He is very approachable, will listen carefully to your concerns and make thoughtful recommendations. He genuinely cares about all of our children.

Having worked for the Minuteman Regional School District for 30 years, I have had the pleasure of providing transportation services for such groups LABB etc . as well regular / Special Ed. students for transportation services as well as for various after school activities in addition to regular arrival and departure of students during regular school hours. The bottom line in the support of Bill Hayner for re-election to the Arlington School Committee is to have a strong advocate for special needs students and their families. He has experienced fostering the needs and advocating on the major issues affecting all special needs students and their families for many years.!

  • Sue Doctrow
  • My husband and I have been friends with Bill and Bonnie for several years, having met them through very close mutual friends in Lexington.  I know Bill, too (and, Bonnie) from Town Meeting.  Bill and I have had very animated discussions about Arlington issues quite a few times, not only at the home of our mutual friends and during TM breaks, but once even out in the Gold’s Gym parking lot for an impromptu TM strategy session that lasted at least a half hour! Bill has much relevant educational, legal and lifetime experience that I don’t need to repeat here.  His passion for Arlington and dedication to public education are so sincere and strong.  If that weren't the case, I bet he'd be happily planning more fun time with his beautiful grandchildren instead of running for School Committee.  Bill's opinions are sincere and strong, too, and that’s an asset....he will always speak his mind, but will also always listen to other opinions and discuss differences. And, he will change his mind, too, if convinced, and will work toward consensus.  I am voting for Bill, and for incumbents Joe Curro and Leba Heigham.  As I believe Joe Curro said in the televised Advocate/ACMI debates, we need more continuity on the School Committee.  There are some exceptionally dedicated, talented people who deserve to continue the work they’ve begun.  And, I’d like to see Bill on there, too -- he will bring complementary experience and perspectives, and I know, too, that he will work collegially with the other members.  Plus, he and I will have that much more to discuss in the Gold's parking lot, assuming he still has time for the gym.  Go, Bill!
